On June 20, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine held a symposium for the decade anniversary of President Xi Jinping’s remarks on the opening ceremony of Chinese Medicine Confucius Institute (CMCI). Officials including Vice Chair Zhang Lianzheng from the National CPPCC Committee for Education, Science, Health and P.E., Vice Governor Chen Xingying from Jiangsu Provincial Government, Vice Secretary General from Jiangsu Provincial Government, Vice Director from Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, Vice Chair and Director Zhu Ming from Jiangsu Provincial Committee of Health and Wellbeing & Jiangsu Provincial Administration of Chinese Medicine. Prof. Cheng Chun, Chair of NJUCM Administrative Council and Prof. Hu Gang, NJUCM President attended the symposium. Prof. Cheng Chun acted as the moderator of the symposium.

Prof. Hu Gang relayed the message from the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Prof. Hu Gang relayed the message from the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, to learn President Xi Jinping’s important remarks on Chinese medicine, such as how to inherit and innovate Chinese medicine with a special focus on the talents team construction. NJUCM is expected to grasp the opportunity of joint construction by the NATCM and the Jiangsu Provincial Government, to push forward the disciplinary build-up and talent cultivation in Chinese medicine fields.

 

Vice Governor Chen Xingying pointed out in her speech that NJUCM must shoulder the historical mission in implementing President Xi Jinping’s keynote speech. Over the past few years, NJUCM’s overall strength is ranked among the top Chinese medicine higher education institutions. During the Covid-19 situation in 2020, NJUCM sent a number of experts to participate in the prevention and treatment for the pandemic, contributing NJUCM wisdom and efforts to the fight of the Covid-19 situation. The present period is the golden time for the university’s development. She hopes that NJUCM will vigorously push forward the Chinese medicine education, research innovation, social service and cultural exchanges. 

Academician Chen Kaixian, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Huang Luqi, Chinese Academy of Engineering, also Dean, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Academician Jiang Hualiang, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Wang Qi, Chinese Academy of Engineering and Grand Chinese Medicine Master, Zou Yanqing, Grand Chinese Medicine Master delivered lectures in titles of “ A deep understanding of Chinese medicine’s strategic standing and historical mission at the present time”, “To play the role of Chinese medicine in preventing diseases, safeguarding the life and wellbeing of people by using Chinese methods”, “the fresh opportunities for Chinese medicine development”, “to understand President Xi Jinping’s remarks from the angle of Chinese Medicine development history and the strategic direction of the nation” and “inherit and innovate, endeavor to take the lead” respectively. 


NJUCM Vice President Sun Zhiguang chaired the session of free exchanges. Prof. Zhang Qicheng explained the theory of keys in Chinese medicine from the levels of three aspects including values, behavioral cultural, and material cultural. Dean Qi Kai from Swiss Academy of Chinese Medicines illustrated the cultural aspects of Chinese medicine from the culture and philosophy angle. Prof. Wen Xiang from School of Medical Humanism pointed out that to develop Chinese medicine, confidence should be steadfast. Prof. Zhang Zongming as Dean, School of Medical Humanism, also Director, Chinese Medicine Cultural Research Center provided insights, measures and suggestions regarding the Chinese medicine’s leading role for Chinese cultural’s spread.

Prof. Wu Mianhua, the previous NJUCM President, and Prof. Huang Guicheng, the previous NJUCM Vice President, both as participants and witness of the opening ceremony of the Chinese Medicine Confucius Institute, shared the original ideas to promote the spread of Chinese culture with the unique culture of Chinese medicine. They reviewed the years after the opening of CMCI, and proposed suggestions of strengthening Chinese medicine classics inheritance, of devoting more efforts to train multi-level talents, and improve the innovation in Chinese medicine theory and technology. 

Prof. Zhang Yanping, as the previous Chinese Dean of CMCI, now as the Vice Dean of School of Medical Humanism, shared her experiences in working at the CMCI. Entrusted by Prof. Huang Huang, Dean of International Chinese Jingfang Institute, Dr. Zhang Xue Guang introduced cases of telling the world the story of Chinese medicine by Jingfang. 


A decade ago, NJUCM is fortunate to witness President Xi Jinping’s new ideas and judgement on how to develop Chinese medicine. Over the last ten years, NJUCM has made some achievements under the guidance of President Xi Jinping’s remarks. Facing up to the future, the university will insist on inheritance and innovation in developing Chinese medicine, and strive to achieve new millstones in the fresh journey of constructing first-class and high-level university.
