NJUCM is redesignated as the WHO Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine

Recently, Dr. Takeshi Kasai, Director of the Western Pacific Division of the World Health Organization (WHO), sent a letter to Professor Hu Gang, President of NJUCM, formally confirming NJUCM has been  redesignated as the WHO Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine. So far, NJUCM has entered the tenth term, which will last until March 12, 2024.

The work plan of NJUCM in the tenth term includes three aspects: to assist WHO in strengthening the education and training of traditional and complementary medicine practitioners in member states, to assist WHO in improving the rational use of traditional and complementary medicine and raising public awareness, to assist WHO in formulating relevant norms, standards and technical documents to promote the evidence-based development of traditional, complementary and integrated medical model.

In 1983, NJUCM was designated as the WHO Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine for the first time. Since November 2019, International Cooperation and Exchange Office, International Education College led the redesignation process, carried out several rounds of all English video conference with Western Pacific Division of WHO, and organized experts of our university in clinical and basic research of Chinese medicine and Chinese materia medica to initiate academic communication with Traditional Medicine Division of WHO, try to eliminate the cognitive barriers between each other. In addition, we actively participated in the research work of WHO CC in China, successfully completed the review of T&CM technical documents. At the same time, during the global anti-epidemic period, we actively organized and participated in the translation of epidemic prevention and control information guidelines on Chinese medicine, which laid a solid foundation for the successful redesignation of our university as the WHO Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine.

The redesignation of NJUCM as the WHO CC is of great practical significance and far-reaching historical significance for the overseas development of Chinese medicine. In recent years, closely centering on the action framework of the WHO Strategy for Traditional Medicine 2014-2023, the University has improved the quality of international education on Chinese medicine, established the Confucius Institute for Chinese Medicine and overseas Chinese medicine centers, and made great efforts to promote the spread and development of Chinese medicine in the world. NJUCM will constantly improve the quality of Chinese Medicine teaching, strengthen scientific research cooperation, actively promote the construction of Chinese Medicine guidelines and standardization, fully fulfill the responsibilities of the WHO Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine to jointly build a community of human health.
