The First School of Clinical Medicine is a teaching institution taking the clinical disciplines of traditional Chinese medicine as the main part and integrating teaching, scientific research and clinical medical treatment.
Established in 1958, the School was originally known as the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Nanjing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 1984, a new Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine was made up of the TCM Clinical Teaching and Research Office of the original Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Clinical Teaching and Research Office of Western Medicine of the Original Basic Department of Western Department, and it was renamed as the First School of Clinical Science of Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1995. It was also known as the Research Institute of Clinical Medicine when the Research Office of Emergent and Difficult Cases was Incorporated into it in 2001. Since April 2011 when it was merged with the Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Jiangsu Province Hospital of TCM), integrated management has been exercised on medicine, teaching and research.
The School is set up with 20 teaching and research facilities, of which the clinical teaching facilities include the six departments of Chinese Internal Medicine, Surgery of Chinese Medicine, Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, Clinical Pharmacology, Medical Imaging, Clinical Nursing, covering the Teaching and Research Office of Chinese Internal Medicine ( Research Institute of Chinese Internal Medicine), the Teaching and Research Office of Chinese Medicine Case Study, the Research Office of Pediatrics of Chinese Medicine, the Teaching and Research Office of General Practice, the Teaching and Research Office of Surgery, the Teaching and Research Office of Orthopedics of Chinese Medicine (Research Institute of Orthopedics of Chinese Medicine), the Teaching and Research Office of Gynecology of Chinese Medicine, the Teaching and Research Office of Ophthalmology of Chinese Medicine, the Teaching and Research Office of Optometry, the Teaching and Research Office of Otorhinolaryngology of Chinese Medicine, the Teaching and Research Office of Internal Medicine, the Teaching and Research Office of Diagnostics, the Teaching and Research Office of Medical Imaging and the Research Center for Clinical and Medical Experiment, altogether 15 clinical research and teaching offices. There are five research institutes (centers) including the Research Institute of Emergent and Difficult Cases in TCM(Key Research Office of the Mechanism of Stagnant Heat, a Refractory Disease in Internal Medicine, and the Work Office of Zhou Zhongying, a famous doctor), the Research Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine against Tumor, the Clinical Teaching Research Center, the Research Institute of Pediatrics of Chinese Medicine, and the Research Center of Prescriptions by Famous Doctors..
The School centers around all disciplines in clinical Chinese medicine, and integrates education, research and clinical medicine together. Since April 2011, the school has been teaming up with the university’s affiliated hospital (Jiangsu Province TCM Hospital) in that the faculty work as clinical physicians in the hospital and teach at the university in the meanwhile. The school boasts of abundant qualified teachers in a reasonable structure. Its faulty and staff (the affiliated hospital calculated) include 345 professors and researchers, 430 associate professors and researchers, 5 Chinese Medicine Grand Masters, 1 recipient of National Teaching Celebrity award, 1 TCM Higher Education Teaching Celebrity, 1 Specially-Appointed Professors by Universities in Jiangsu Province, 4 Famous Teacher on national level, 4 Qihuang Scholars, 92 doctoral supervisors and 132 master supervisors, 25 instructors of national TCM inheritance and national-level inheritance studio experts, 2 recipients of Bethune Award, 2 recipients of China Physician Award, 37 experts receiving allowance from the State Council, 60 provincial-level famous TCM physicians and famous physicians in integrated Chinese and western medicine, 6 first-batch provincial-level grand TCM masters. The School takes the initiative to establish the Teaching Affiliation of NJUCM Affiliated Hospitals to integrate the classroom teaching, clinical teaching and continued education, and strengthens the fusion and coordinated development between medicine and education, and integrates the excellent teaching resources in TCM education.
Inheriting the historical humanistic tradition of NJUCM, deep academic thinking and cultural foundation, the School fits its growth into the China’s economic development and the trend of Chinese and western medicine, pioneering to provide an all-around education programs integrating Chinese and western clinical medicines. The School offers 7 doctoral degree programs in Chinese Internal Medicine, Surgery of Chinese Medicine, Gynecology of Chinese Medicine, Pediatrics of Chinese Medicine, Orthopedics of Chinese Medicine, Otorhinolaryngology of Chinese Medicine, Combined Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, and 9 master degree programs in in Chinese Internal Medicine, Surgery of Chinese Medicine, Gynecology of Chinese Medicine, Pediatrics of Chinese Medicine, Orthopedics of Chinese Medicine, Otorhinolaryngology of Chinese Medicine, Combined Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, General Medicine, Clinical Medicine (newly added in 2018), and has the Center for Post-Doctoral Studies of Chinese Medicine and Combined Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine. The doctoral and master degree programs cover all of the secondary clinical disciplines of Chinese Medicine. The School offers five-year, eight-year and nine-year learning of TCM, Ophthalmology & Optometry, Pediatrics of Chinese Medicine, Gynecology and Obstetrics of Chinese Medicine and other specialties. The Chinese Medicine program is a nationally characteristic specialty and a brand specialty in Jiangsu Province, while the Teaching Experiment Center is a demonstration center for teaching experiment at both national and provincial levels. Pediatrics of Chinese Medicine and Chinese Internal Medicine are taught by national excellent faculties. The courses of Pediatrics of Chinese Medicine and Chinese Internal Medicine are considered as courses shared as national high-quality resources. There are 3 teaching experimental classrooms jointly built by ministry and province, and 2 national classic exquisite courses. In 2015, the School passed with excellent grades through the professional assessment of Chinese Medicine programs and the education quality evaluation undertaken by the Ministry of Education.
The School pays attention to the build-up of key disciplines, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (provincial priority and first-level discipline), Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine (provincial priority discipline), Chinese Internal Medicine, Surgery of Chinese Medicine, Gynecology of Chinese Medicine, Pediatrics of Chinese Medicine, Ophthalmology of Chinese Medicine, General Practice of Chinese Medicine, Orthopedics of Chinese Medicine, Hepatobiliary diseases in Chinese Medicine, Bi Diseases in Chinese Medicine, Oncology in Chinese Medicine and other key disciplines at various levels, 1 of which is a key discipline at the national level, 2 are key disciplines (cultivation) at the national level, 2 are priority disciplines in the colleges and universities of Jiangsu Province, 4 are key disciplines at the Jiangsu provincial level, 20 are key disciplines of State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1 is a key discipline at the level of Jiangsu Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and 2 are key disciplines at the university level. In 2015, the Chinese Medicine program was approved as Jiangsu Provincial Brand program, and in 2016, it went through the national fourth assessment and won the A Grade, laying a solid foundation for the university’s entry into the national “Double First-class” initiative. Pediatrics of Chinese Medicine, a nationally key discipline, is offered at the leading level across the nation, while Chinese Internal Medicine, Gynecology of Chinese Medicine, Surgery of Chinese Medicine, and Orthopedics of Chinese Medicine are in the front rank of similar disciplines of the national TCM colleges and universities. The affiliated hospital boasts of 6 nationally level key departments, 5 TCM diagnosis and treatment centers of SATCM, and 13 key departments of SATCM.
The School has adhered to the strategy of developing research and education simultaneously, resulting in an overall favorable development in research, winning altogether over 800 projects, 130 of national level and 67 of ministerial and provincial level totaling 163,600,000 yuan.
According to the construction and development policies of doing certain things and refraining from doing other things, the First School of Clinical Medicine will identify the correct direction, highlight the key points, optimize the structure, develop characteristics and emphasize innovation. It will establish the general objectives of cultivation of talents as the center and teaching and scientific research as the main part, and ensure the harmonious, healthy and sustainable development of its various undertakings. It will also further strengthen the build-up of faculties and establish a teaching faculty featured by a considerable quantity of members, a reasonable structure, highly qualified teachers and relative stability. By centering on the development of excellent, highly qualified talents in TCM that are able to meet the market demand, it will strengthen the development of specialty and textbook, and optimize the set-up of the curriculum, improve the teaching methods, and reinforce the construction of the labs and teaching facilities. Led by the development of key disciplines, it will strengthen the scientific research, improve the overall competitiveness and promote the synergic development of medicine, teaching and research as a trinity.
