The Second School of Clinical Medicine, also known as School of Acumox and Tuina, has evolved from the Acupuncture and Moxibustion Program since the establishment of the University. In 1955, led by Mr. Cheng Dan’an, the first president of our University, the first Member of the Academic Divisions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the traditional Chinese medicine, the creator of Acupuncture’s modern education, we have created a Program for the Science of Acupuncture and Moxibustion and established the first special hospital of Acupuncture and Moxibustion in China. With the complete efforts made by Cheng Dan’an and Qiu Maoliang and other older-generation acupuncturists to develop the University, we set up the Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion in 1982, and based on this, we have developed and become the Second School of Clinical Medicine, a school featured by cultivating talents in acupuncture and moxibustion, tuina, rehabilitation, health preservation, food hygiene and, nutrition, and other non-drug TCM health promotion methods.

At present, the School offers such seven disciplines as Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Tuina, Health Preservation of Chinese Medicine, Rehabilitation of Chinese Medicine, Chinese and Western Medicine Integrated Nutrition, Rehabilitation Treatment, and Rehabilitation Medicine and Physical Therapy. Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Tuina, and Health Preservation of Chinese Medicine, of which 3 are the key disciplines by State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and 1 is Jiangsu Provincial key discipline. Now the School maintains two doctoral degree programs for second-level disciplines in Acumox and Tuina, and Rehabilitation of Chinese Medicine, 3 master’s degree programs for second-level disciplines in Acumox and Tuina, Rehabilitation of Chinese Medicine, and Rehabilitation Medicine and Physical Therapy, and 4 undergraduate programs for Acumox and Tuina, Rehabilitation Medicine, Food Hygiene and Nutrition, and Health Preservation of Chinese Medicine. The Acumox and Tuina program is a characteristic program of preponderant disciplines of Jiangsu Province. The faculty for the Science of Acupuncture and Moxibustion is a teaching team at the provincial level. The Science of Acupuncture and the Science of Tuina are accredited as excellent courses among those taught in English for overseas students in Jiangsu Province. The school now retains a faculty of 105 full-time members, including 1 Specially-Appointed Professors by Universities in Jiangsu Province, 41 teaching and scientific research workers with high academic titles, 16 on-the-job doctoral supervisors, and 39 master supervisors, contributing to a reasonable structure of talent pool and faculty contingent.

The School now has the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for Combined Treatment of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, The Health Preservation Research Center jointly built by Jiangsu Provincial Government and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Jiangsu Provincial Lab for Technology and Engineering of Health Preservation of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing Center for Engineering and Technology Research on Health Preservation of Chinese Medicine, Jiangsu Provincial Center for Teaching Experiment as well as other educational and research platforms. The School has scored great successes in the combined treatment of Acupuncture and Drugs in enhancing efficacy and reducing toxicity, the treatment for spine-related diseases, the treatment for endocrine diseases by Acumox, the treatment for cardiovascular diseases by Acumox, rehabilitation for cardiovascular diseases, rehabilitation for geriatric diseases and cuisine with Chinese medicine elements.
