School of Health Economics and Management was found in 1995 and was originally known as the Medicine Management Department affiliated to the Department of Social Sciences. In 2000, it was renamed as School of Economics, Trade and Management and has been known as the current name since April 2016. In 2006, “Two courses” of the Department of Social Sciences and “Psychological” teaching institution were separated away and became the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Since its inception, the School has been adhering to the profound campus culture and simple spirit of NJUCM, and the style of study as well as deep academic thinking, in line with China's economic and social development and the trend of the medical industry, promoting multi-disciplinary coordinated development of new education pattern, actively exploring the way of cultivating students’ comprehensive quality of scientific spirit and humanistic attainment as well as several higher education models such as cooperation between Chinese and foreign schools, and schools and enterprises, so as to cultivate and transport a large number of outstanding professionals for the society.
The School has a young and middle-aged faculty team of high academic caliber. Currently, there are 88 faculty and staff, including 68 full-time teachers, 29 professors and associate professors (including 2 doctoral supervisors and 15 postgraduate supervisors), 47 PhD Degree holders and PhD students. Of them, 8 are candidates selected for the “Cyanine Project” of Jiangsu Province, 1 awarded the title of Young Teacher sponsored by Fok Ying Tung Education Foundation and 4 awarded the prize of An Advanced Teacher. The School has 1 master degree program, 8 undergraduate programs, 2 characteristic majors at provincial level, 1 talent cultivation innovation experimental area at provincial level, 1 laboratory jointly established by Jiangsu province and Ministry of Education.
The School has been committed to cultivating international, application-oriented, inter-disciplinary high-quality talented personnel. Supported by the disciplines of Chinese medicine, the School has formed its industrial positioning and specialty features. Based on the theory of economics, management and law, the School has built the students' professional core competencies. Taking the cooperation with the government and enterprises as a platform, the School has been striving to strengthen the practical and innovative spirit, and professional ability of the students. By cooperation with well-known universities at home and abroad, the School has been carrying out the optimal allocation of teachers in the international context so as to achieve the sharing of human resources and expand the international perspective of students. Having been advocating the style of study featured by “integrity, simplicity, self-reliance and progress”, the School has been continuously strengthening the construction of connotation, reforming education model and methods as well as mobilizing the specialty construction and construction of the curriculum drove by construction of the disciplines. Now, the School has 1 Master Degree program of Public Management, 8 undergraduate programs and two professional directions such as international economy and trade, public management, e-commerce, marketing, information management and information systems, pharmacy administration, labor and social security and healthcare service management. Among them, the “health management and communication” is cooperative project with Swinburne University of Technology, Australia. In addition, the School has a key construction discipline designated by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a provincial key construction specialty. Currently there are more than 2,000 undergraduate students and 80 postgraduate and doctoral students on campus.
Having been insisting on the concept of “teaching and scientific research benefit each other”, the School has been encouraging teachers to strengthen the cooperation in teaching and scientific research. The School has set up a university-level key discipline of social medicine and health management and a teaching team of public management. In the past five years, the School has applied various kinds of research projects at all levels, with the number of projects sponsored by National Natural Science Foundation and the National Social Sciences Foundation as well as projects above the ministerial and provincial levels rising year by year. An education and teaching result was awarded the provincial second prize and 15 participants in 6 research projects won different levels of prizes. In addition, the School has been devoted to the construction of teaching materials. In recent five years, over 10 teaching materials have been listed as the teaching materials for the national “Eleventh Five-year Plan” , “Twelfth Five-year Plan” and “Thirteenth Five-year Plan” totally, and moreover, dozens of teaching materials (monographs) were compiled or involved with the teachers of the School as chief or associate editors. The School has been paying high attention to exchange and cooperation with the domestic and foreign academic circles. So far, it has established inter-university programme cooperation and academic exchange relationship with many famous colleges and universities such as the Western Sydney University, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Swinburne University of Technology, Fudan University, Soochow University of Taiwan.
The School has an excellent teaching environment. At present, there are 7 departments: Public Management (PM), Economic and Trade (E&T), Information Management (IM), Business Administration (BA), Electronic Commerce (E-commerce), Pharmacy Administration and Law (PA), Health Management and Medical Security, international trade and other 17 teaching and research sections, an experimental center, 2 research institutes, 2 research centers, an independent teaching laboratory area of 500 square meters which can accommodate 230 students for experimental operation. The School has maintained a close relationship with dozens of institutions of higher learning to effectively optimize the allocation of teacher resources to achieve the sharing of human resources. The TCM Development and Policy Research Center co-constructed by Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and China National Health Development Research Center, Nanjing Branch are important research bases for National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People’s Republic of China and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine to determine TCM regulations and policies. The School has maintained a cooperative relationship with medical and health administrative organs, medical institutions and pharmaceutical companies in Jiangsu Province and other places nationwide, and possessed 100 teaching bases. The Simcere Business School jointly established with Simcere Pharmaceutical Group has been focusing on reform of higher education curriculum system and personnel training mode so as to enhance the practical ability of university students in response to the new situation and promote their employment rate.
The School has been actively exploring new ideas and new methods of teaching and educating, and based on teaching and management innovation, putting into effective implementation the student education, management and service work. The School has selected and appointed outstanding teachers as undergraduate supervisors, all teachers (CPC members) have been encouraged to provide assistance to economically challenged students, teachers have been guiding students to carry out the second classroom teaching, academic lectures and co-construction of classroom and other diversified activities, thus forming favorable educational environment and improving the students’ comprehensive quality in an all-round manner. The Summer Social Practice Activity organized among students has been awarded the provincial prize in consecutive 10 years, and commended by the Propaganda Department of the Central Committee of the CPC, the Ministry of Education, Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China and the National Association of Students in 2002. In 2008, the School won the second prize in Jiangsu Students’ Debate Competition. From 2010 to 2012, the School won the second and third prize in the National "Challenge Cup" College Students Business Plan Competition and Extracurricular for three times. Academic and Technical Works Competition twice in succession, and five prizes in the provincial competitions. In 2010, the School won the second prize in National E-Commerce “Innovation, Creation and Entrepreneurship” Challenge among college students. From 2011 to 2013, the School won the first prize in POCIB Competition and won the honorary title of “May Fourth Red-Flag CYL Committee” of Jiangsu Province in 2012.
Today, School of Health Economics and Management has entered a stage of rapid development, and in the future journey, the passionate and energetic staff will, by every means, uphold the tradition of innovation and solid work style, earnestly carry forward the spirit of pursuing excellence, honesty and forging ahead, steadily promote the construction of disciplines, talented people and connotations so as to push the school to a new height!
