The Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine

Founded in October 1954, under the leadership of Ye Juquan, the first director, a member of Academic Divisions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine is one of the first provincial hospitals of TCM nationwide. Since it was founded over 60 years ago, it has strengthened the featured advantages of traditional Chinese medicine by orienting in traditional Chinese medicine, and gathered a group of prestigious doctors and experts, thanks to ambitious and hardworking efforts made by generations. In order to adapt to social demand, it has constantly enhanced its capacity of diagnosis and treatment of emergency, difficult and complicated diseases, reinforced combination of Chinese and Western medicine. With its enhanced comprehensive strength, constantly promoted academic level and capacity of diagnosis and treatment, The Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine has kept its leading position in nationwide TCM system and become a nationally renowned large Grade III Level A comprehensive Hospital of TCM with profound culture. It has been awarded with “Nationwide Provincial Demonstration Hospital of TCM”, “Advanced Collective in National Health System”, “Advanced Collective in Provincial Health Mood”, "Top Ten Hospital” in Jiangsu Province, " Jiangsu Provincial Role Model in Ethical and Cultural Progress ", National Top 100 Hospitals", “National Advanced Health Care Institution in Culture Construction”, and etc.

It covers an area of 49,000 m2 and the floorage of 200,000 m2 after its project of southern expansion is completed and comes into service. It has set 58 wards and has increased its hospital beds to 2,500. It is staffed with more than 2,600 employees, among whom medical technicians account for 87.5% including 2 national TCM masters, 2 winners of Bethune medal, 36 experts obtaining the special government allowance, 60 provincial well-known TCM doctors and well-known TCM and Western Medicine doctors, and 406 senior medical workers, 169 with doctor degree, 307 with master degree, 35 doctoral supervisors and 103 master supervisors, 9 middle-aged and young experts with outstanding contributions in Jiangsu Province, 40 key talents in provincial "333 Program", 2 key talents in the "Science and Education Project" of provincial health department, 12 provincial TCM leading talents, 1 from TCM clinical medicine center, and 61 winners of  the provincial six talent peaks. It has 229 people conferred with senior professional titles and 280 people conferred with vice-senior professional titles and 593 with master degree and above.

It has set 43 clinical departments and medical laboratories, including 4 National key clinical specialties, 1 key discipline of Ministry of Education, 12 key disciplines of State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1 preponderant discipline of universities and colleges in Jiangsu, 2 key medical disciplines in Jiangsu Province, 4 National key clinical specialties development organizations, 14 key specialties and development organizations of State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the People's Republic of China, 1 national emergency clinical base construction unit of TCM, 5 provincial demonstration specialties of TCM, 19 provincial key specialties and construction units, 5 national “12th Five-Year” key specialty construction and cultivation projects, 3 national Class III key labs, national pharmaceutical clinical base and "TCM GCP center" of Ministry of Science and Technology. Certified by WHO/TDR "Strategic Initiative for Developing Capacity in Ethical Review" (SIDCER) in November 2007, its ethics committee is one of the first certified organizations in the country and also the first in the TCM system.  Its clinical laboratory is the first medical laboratory in East China and the second medical laboratory in national TCM system passing the ISO15189 Certification authorized by CNAS (China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment) and its clinical pathological laboratory is the first laboratory in national TCM system passing the ISO17025 Certification authorized by CNAS. Equipped with large-scale medical equipment and instruments worth RMB 320 million in total including magnetic resonance, whole-body spiral CT, hyperbaric oxygen chamber The Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine can not only meet its demand for medical education and research but also promote its medical technology development to a higher and faster level, owing to the well-equipped and multiple function equipment and instruments. Based on clinical empirical formulas supplied by prestigious senior TCM experts, its preparation department has developed more than 140 featured preparations in more than 20 formulations, which are well received by patients.

In recent years, aiming at enhancing medical quality and service, the hospital has spared no effort to highlight its featured advantage of traditional Chinese medicine and meanwhile enhance its comprehensive medical service capacity; and proactively advance its connotation and extension construction and reinforce its foundation through annual hospital management activities. With that all its medical workers keep their mission in mind and work diligently. Its benefits have been remarkably increased for consecutive years and all its undertakings have always kept good momentum of development. In 2012, outpatient and emergency visits exceed 3,670,000 and 46,000 patients were discharged while all its business indicators reached new high.

Its entire medical business indicators stand in the forefront in the national TCM system and among all major hospitals in Jiangsu Province, its comprehensive strength and academic position occupy a leading position in national provincial hospitals of TCM. With constantly expanding social impact, it enjoys the excellent reputation in Jiangsu province and even in the country, serving patients both at home and abroad.
