The Second School of Clinical Medicine

The Second School of Clinical Medicine, also known as School of Acumox and Tuina, has evolved from the Acupuncture and Moxibustion Program since the establishment of the University. In 1955, led by Mr. Cheng Dan’an, the first president of our University, the first Member of the Academic Divisions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the traditional Chinese medicine, the creator of Acupuncture’s modern education, we have created a Program for the Science of Acupuncture and Moxibustion and established the first special hospital of Acupuncture and Moxibustion in China. With the complete efforts made by Cheng Dan’an and Qiu Maoliang and other older-generation acupuncturists to develop the University, we set up the Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion in 1982, and based on this, we have developed and become the Second School of Clinical Medicine, a school featured by cultivating talents in acupuncture and moxibustion, tuina, health preservation, rehabilitation, nutrition, and other TCM health services.
At present, the School offers such seven disciplines as Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Tuina, Health Preservation of Chinese Medicine, Rehabilitation of Chinese Medicine, Chinese and Western Medicine Integrated Nutrition, Rehabilitation Treatment, and Rehabilitation Medicine and Physical Therapy. Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Tuina, and Health Preservation of Chinese Medicine are the key disciplines by State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, with solid disciplinary strength. Now the School maintains two doctoral degree programs for second-level disciplines in Acumox and Tuina, and Rehabilitation of Chinese Medicine, 3 master’s degree programs for second-level disciplines in Acumox and Tuina, Rehabilitation of Chinese Medicine, and Rehabilitation Medicine and Physical Therapy, and 4 undergraduate programs for Acumox and Tuina, Rehabilitation Medicine, Food Hygiene and Nutrition, and Health Preservation of Chinese Medicine. The Acumox and Tuina program is a characteristic program of preponderant disciplines of Jiangsu Province. The faculty for the Science of Acupuncture and Moxibustion is a teaching team at the provincial level. The Science of Acupuncture and the Science of Tuina are accredited as excellent courses among those taught in English for overseas students in Jiangsu Province. The school now retains a faculty of 103 full-time members, including 1 Specially-Appointed Professors by Universities in Jiangsu Province, 41 teaching and scientific research workers with high academic titles, 18 on-the-job doctoral supervisors, and 39 master supervisors, contributing to a reasonable structure of talent pool and faculty contingent.
The School now has the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for Combined Treatment of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, Jiangsu Provincial Lab for Technology and Engineering of Health Preservation of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing Center for Engineering and Technology Research on Health Preservation of Chinese Medicine, Jiangsu Provincial Center for Teaching Experiment, the Demonstration Center for Disease Prevention in TCM, the Center for Synergy and Innovation of TCM Prevention and Healthcare, the Base for National Standard Research and Development and Professional Talent Training for TCM Health Care Services and other disciplinary platforms. Based on these platforms of various levels, the School annually undertakes nearly one hundred research and development projects at all levels, and has developed steady directions for and scored great successes in the mechanism and clinical application of the effects of Acumox and Tuina, digging into the theory and research on disease prevention in TCM, the standardization of TCM health preservation technology, and non-drug health promotion among other aspects.
