Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine started graduate education in 1979, and enrolled the first batch of 20 master degree candidates. In 1981, the university was approved by the State Council as one of the first-batch institutions granted with the authority to offer master and doctoral degrees. The Chinese Internal Medicine has become one of the first-batch specialties on which doctoral degrees can be granted, and additionally, eight specialties including the Theoretical Foundations of TCM have the right to grant master degrees.

In 1995, as approved by the Ministry of Human Resources, the University set up the first TCM post-doctoral research station. In September of the same year, it enrolled the first post-doctoral candidate majoring in Acupuncture and Moxibustion. In 1997, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine signed an agreement for joint development of TCM specialized postgraduates with Toyama Medicine and Pharmacy University, creating the mode of cultivating postgraduates jointly with foreign universities; in 1988, the University became one of the first-batch experimental units offering degrees of master and doctor in Clinical Medicine; in 2002, it was approved as an experimental unit where undergraduates not majoring in Medicine are allowed to learn for the master-doctor continuous study of traditional Chinese medicine.

After hard work of more than thirty years, rapid development has been achieved in postgraduate education, with increased categories of disciplines, expanded scale of education and improved quality of cultivation. The GraduateSchoolhas delivered a large batch of high-level personnel in TCM for the country and thus become an important base for cultivating TCM professionals.

The School currently offers 1 state key discipline (level 1), 2 state key disciplines (level 2), 2 state key disciplines (cultivation), 2 project disciplines for phase II of superiority discipline construction project in colleges and universities of Jiangsu Province, and 2 key sequence disciplines; 2 key (cultivation) disciplines in the period of the 13th five-year plan in Jiangsu Province; 33 key disciplines in TCM by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 8 key disciplines by TCM Administration of Jiangsu Province, and 16 key disciplines at the university level. The Clinical Medicine, and Pharmacology and Toxicology are among the global top 1% of ESI. The School now has 3 post doctoral research stations, 3 doctoral degree (level 1 disciplines) programs, 14 doctoral degree (level 2 disciplines) programs, 18 doctoral degree (level 2 disciplines) programs set up independently. It has 5 master’s degree (level 1 discipline) programs, 22 master’s degree (level 2 disciplines) programs, and 19 master’s degree (level 2 disciplines) programs set up independently. It has 1 category of doctoral specialized degree, and 5 categories of master specialized degree. With the degree program covering all of level 2 disciplines in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Traditional Chinese Herbs, Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, the School has the right of self examination of the doctoral supervisors and the right to review the professors specializing in main subject. By the end of December 2016, the School had 307 doctoral supervisors, 596 master supervisors, 3,801 postgraduate students of all types, including 760 doctoral students, 3,041 master students. 

The School values the development of the quality of talented people to improve the innovative ability of the postgraduate students. It has granted a nomination prize for its 3 doctoral dissertations among the national excellent one hundred ones, with 23 excellent doctoral dissertations ofJiangsuprovince, 49 excellent master theses ofJiangsuprovince. It has obtained 383 projects of innovation plans of graduate students, 44 topics of teaching reform of graduate education, 13 excellent graduate courses, and 1 course taught bilingually. It owns 9 graduate work stations at enterprise, and 8 industrial professors. It received the second prize for achievements in the reform of development mode for graduates inJiangsuProvince.

The School makes active efforts to carry out international cooperation and overseas study with regard to graduate education. It has declared international cooperation and exchange project for innovative personnel with the Committee of State Foundation for Studying Abroad, and established long-term joint cultivation projects of graduates with universities and medical institutions in Britain, the United States, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and other countries, by which, a large number of supervisors and graduates have been delivered to take part in international cooperation. It has constantly expanded the enrolment of foreign postgraduate students and postgraduate students fromHong Kong,TaiwanandMacau, and broadened the wide channel of international cooperation and foreign exchange by offering courses taught in English.

In the future, the Graduate School of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine will adhere to the educational idea of “Benevolent Integrity, Benevolent Technique and Benevolent Person”, strive to build a system of cultivating personnel who are characteristic of traditional Chinese medicine, as part of the efforts to building the University into a world-leading one of TCM offering first-rate disciplines. Scholarships and Grants

Gradate School is responsible for matters concerning scholarships and grants of graduates studying in Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine.

The university has established 1 national-level scholarships programs, 1 university-level scholarships programs, and 9 grant programs. With a total of more than 32 million yuan each year, The highest scholarship reaches 30,000 yuan and the highest grant reaches 10,000 yuan.

In addition, the university has taken many measures to help graduate students finish their studies, such as the National Student Loan (up to 10,000 yuan per year) for needy students.

Admissions of Master’s and Doctoral Students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan

Overview 

Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Education Center of NJUCM is responsible for enrollment and administration of students from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan for the programs of Master or Doctor degree. This college is a teaching unit within the NJUCM and comprises of various general and individual services. It has a strong academic staff, experienced in both theory and clinical training. All the teachers are well versed in the history and development of TCM and acupuncture, and understand international students' individualities and specific requirements. As a result, classes are well organized, combining both theory courses and clinical practice.
